The debate over global warming has taken on an increasingly ideological tone. Global warming is attacked as a just another front in a secret war being waged by leftists, socialists and one-worlders to gain control over our lives and, of course, raise taxes and take away our freedoms. The fact the United Nations is involved . . .well, that's just icing on the cake.
Those who argue against the science have been flooding the internet with blogs and newspaper stories claiming to expose the global warming "hoax." In the end, all their arguments come down to this:
Attack the Facts: Some say the average global warming temperature is rising. Others say no, that is absolutely not true. Some say human activities are producing excess carbon dioxide which is causing the rise in temperatures. Others say they is no evidence to support that. We point our rhetorical guns at each other and commence firing.
Attack the Source: Another line of attack takes aim at the scientists, claiming that they hype the threat of global warming to attract grant money, thereby furthering their own careers. Some go so far as to allege outright falsification of the data. Senator James Inhofe is a leading advocate of that position when he isn't busy attacking the science itself (see above). To be fair, advocates of global warming are often quick to question the financial sources of denier groups. The implication is that the fossil-fuel industry is behind many of these so-called think tanks.
So what is a poor reader to do? Well, I would begin by saying don't take my word for it or anyone else's for that matter. Do your own research. Form your own opinions. This site lists an ever-growing set of governmental, educational, and scientific groups that deal with the science of climate change. Most will support the idea of climate change driven by human activity, but not all of them do. The other side will list theirs. Check them out.
Hey it's not like there is anything at stake here. Just the fate of the planet and the future of our children and grandchildren.
